Tips for Getting Hired as an Electrical Apprentice

If you are looking for employment in the electrical field and have not landed an interview after reaching out to a few companies, you may be discouraged. This is normal. The construction industry's manpower needs are constantly fluctuating, if nobody is hiring one week, chances are someone will be hiring the next week. As the job changes, so does the need for apprentices.

With the large number of electrical companies within the Southern Colorado area, you have a TON of options. Over 80 options in the area can be found by viewing our contractor member list (these companies also get you a discount on tuition at IECSCC).

Here are a few tips if you feel that you have exhausted all your options, or if you're just starting your search:

  • Follow up with companies you have already spoken with. If you are persistent, they will have you in mind when a position does open up, and they will know that you are eager to start working.

  • Drop off resumes. Let them put a face to your name. The personal touch and extra effort of dropping off a resume rather than just calling or emailing can go a long way, even if the hiring manager is not in the office when you're there. For resume tips, keep an eye out for upcoming blog posts, or reach out to our office.

  • Create a cover letter to drop off or send to companies. Cover letters give you more of a chance to showcase your personality and work ethic. Customize a cover letter for each of the companies you are applying to to show them that you have done your research on their business and what they do.
